How Often Should You Clean Your Water Tank?

If you’re one of the thousands of New Zealanders with water tanks on your property, you’ll want to know how often you should clean your water tank. Whether you’re running a farm, raising a family, or just enjoying the quiet life down a gravel road, you’re in good company. But here’s the thing most of us don’t like to think about: what’s actually in that tank? Spoiler alert: it’s not just water.

The Ministry of Health recommends having your tank checked annually, and for good reason. Out of sight might be out of mind, but if you leave it too long, what you don’t see (or smell) will catch up with you.

Why Bother Cleaning It?

Let’s be honest. We all know tanks collect all sorts. Dust, leaves, bird droppings, dead insects, the occasional frog… we’ve seen it all. That gunk settles into sludge, blocks filters, and gives bacteria a warm, cozy place to grow. This can lead to waterborne diseases and other health issues if not addressed.

If you’re using UV filtration, that layer of sludge can block the light and let the bugs sneak through.

So, How Often Should You Clean It?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here are a few things to think about:

  1. Where your water comes from

    1. Roof rainwater? Great, but also a magnet for bird poo, pollen and anything the wind blows in.

    2. Surface water like streams or creeks? You’ve got runoff to think about, too, especially if you’re near farmland or forestry.

  2. What’s around you

Live under trees? Near a gravel road? Downwind from paddocks? Then dust, pollen, and all kinds of debris will probably end up in your tank. If your letterbox is dusty, your tank probably is, too.

  3. How many people are using the water

If you’ve got a house full of people or regular visitors popping in, you’ll go through more water. That means your tank needs to be in top nick more often.

How Do You Know It’s Time for a Clean?

Here are the classic signs:

  • The water smells a bit off (like damp socks or pond water)

  • It tastes funny, and not in a “hmm, mineral-rich” kind of way

  • The colour’s a bit off; brown, yellow, or murky is a no-go

  • You can see sediment at the bottom of the tank

  • Your filters are clogging faster than usual

If you’re noticing one or more of these, in particular low water pressure or smells in the shower, don’t wait. It’s time for a clean.
